Armenia’s Protected Areas – Present and Future

Did you know that approximately 13% of Armenia’s territory is considered protected areas? These areas include numerous reserves, national parks, sanctuaries and natural monuments with different protection regimes. We had the pleasure of delving into the challenges facing Armenia’s natural habitats with Arman Vermishyan, who represents the CNF – Caucasus Nature Fund, an international organization that provides long-term support and management assistance for managing protected areas in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Our Hubbers engaged in a lively discussion, exploring the importance of decentralized operations, management systems, and the rising need to influence people’s perception of nature. Some solutions discussed included developing appropriate structures, adequate staffing, efficient financial management, enhanced science and monitoring, and most importantly mass education and awareness raising.
